About Our Farm

 

 

Agassiz Aqua Farms owns and operates a 30 metric tonne Antibiotic Free Arctic char farm and hatchery located just southeast the Rural Municipality of Gunton, Manitoba, 40 minutes north of the Winnipeg International Airport.

 

The original fish farm and hatchery were constructed on a 160 acre parcel of land in the late 1970’s as a research facility operated jointly by the Department of Fisheries & Oceans Canada (“D.F.O.”) Freshwater Institute and the University of Manitoba.

 

The primary focus of the combined research was dedicated to the rearing of Arctic char and Rainbow Trout in addition to Sturgeon, Sauger and Pickerel. The Rockwood site was chosen for its enviable fresh water supply coming from an Arctic charged, limestone aquifer 130 feet below the surface.
