There are many benefits to eating fish on a regular basis, whether they are wild or farmed. Studies show that people who eat fish at least once per week significantly lower their risk of heart disease and stroke. Furthermore, there is evidence that fish is beneficial for developing the fetal and infant brain.
Health benefits particularly around cardiovascular disease have been associated with fish consumption and to some extent attributed to omega-3 fatty acids. All fish, but particularly "fatty or oily fish" such as salmon, mackerel, herring, trout and sardines, contain significant amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. While fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids, these fatty acids alone cannot be said to account for all of the reported benefits. Pregnant women who eat a high amount of fish give birth to children with higher verbal and social skills. This according to a study that was published in The Lancet.
In Bristol, England 11,875 pregnant women, who were expected to give birth sometime between April 1991 and December 1992, were followed by the researchers. The women were all asked to fill in questionnaires about their diet and their child's development. more...
Diabetic women gain significant health benefits from eating fish - American Heart Association
Eating fish regularly reduced the risk of heart disease in diabetic women by as much as 64 percent, according to study reported in today’s rapid access issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.
“We found that women with type 2 diabetes who ate more fish had significantly lower risk of coronary heart disease and total death than those who rarely ate fish,” says Frank B. Hu, M.D., lead author and associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. more...
